How do you feel when you wake up to the sound of that wintery silence outside and you just know before you get out of bed, that there is a layer of snow on the ground? Does it make you want to shoot back under the covers and wrap them tightly around your neck. Or like me does it make you want to jump up with childish glee, get yourself suitably attired and dash out before it all disappears.

We have had a few snowfalls already in the Peak District, but this morning has got to be the deepest snow I have seen in a long time. There was at least 5 inches if not more in places, and the world could not have looked a more beautiful place. It was as if i’d opened the door to the wardrobe and stepped into Narnia. Now where is Mr Tumnus?

Of course I had to grab my camera, and with Jess wagging her tail beside me, we were off (that is once I had tested a handful of that lovely white snow to see if it was ‘building quality’ or just powdery white dust). Nothing disappoints me more than a white world covered in snow that isnt up to making a snowman. Thankfully every time we have had snow so far it has been of a good quality, and the first time round resulted in what I think is the best snowman I’ve ever had the joy of building.

You have to admit he turned out to be a pretty handsome fella, although the hat could make you think otherwise. I was happy to lend it to him as it was one of the many hats that I thought looked great on in the shop, but once home was put in the cupboard and never worn….when will I learn!

Anyway back to this morning and Narnia. Everything was covered in a beautiful soft white blanket and the reflection of the sunlight on the snow was so bright that I was thankful for reaction lenses. I have an idea! Why dont you put on your bobble hat and scarf and join me on my walk.

Brrrrr well I don’t know about you but I know I need to get indoors, get my wellies off and snuggle up with a mug of hot chocolate. All this talk about Narnia and snow has made me want to search out my copy of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe and settle down for a cosy afternoon of reading.

I do hope you enjoyed our wintery walk and maybe it brought a little cheer to an otherwise ‘Covid’ restricted day. I feel so very thankful at the moment that I am still living in a place where I can safely go out and get some exercise and fresh air. I am very aware that I am one of the lucky ones and my heart is constantly with those whose lives are painfully restricted, as we continue to make our way through a difficult time.

    1. Thanks Gary. You have to build one really dont you. I cant think of anywhere I would rather be with everything that is going on around us. Apart from a weekly visit to keep Simon going staying at home is not too difficult.

    1. Thanks Lauren. The hot chocolate went down a treat. I had to collect Simon a couple of days ago as he had had a couple of falls in the snow where he lives. We managed a bit of a snowy walk and it was definitely Hot choccy and marshmallows when we got back.

  10. Alison, this is altogether beautiful. I love your snowman. We had about 11 inches of snow a few weeks back but city snow and country snow offer different delights. My favorite part of our 11 inch snow was the way it slowly fell on the patio chairs and created shapes of even larger chairs.

  11. What great images, the snowman is magnificent with a fun hat to slow melting. Winter is quite beautiful in the Peaks, it shows off the beauty of trees and nature in a way nothing else can. We’ve just come through a four day blizzard, we garnered up to 6 feet drifts, the poor postman couldn’t even put mail in our box. I wanted winter to show up, just not in four days 😊. You’re very fortunate to have a lovely place to escape COVID for a while.

  13. Thank you for the winter walk. We rarely get snow, so when we do, the whole city runs outdoors to play and build snowmen. As much as I do not like winter, I do enjoy the silence and beauty of snow-enhanced scenes. Because we’re not “built” for snow, we’re sort of confined to our homes/neighborhoods. I would love to see what the mountainous areas, nature preserves, and trails look like, but fear traveling to them would be too dangerous. So thank you for giving me a taste of what I can’t see on my own.
